Twitter Removes “via {client}” Attribution in #newtwitter. Buh-Bye Developers

I’m not the only one who has noticed this, but the #newtwitter is not available to everyone yet, so this feature removal hasn’t gone widespread. In #oldtwitter, you once saw what clients users were tweeting from, whether it was Brizzly, Seesmic, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite or many of the other developers who gave much more functionality to Twitter before it was #newtwitter.

Here’s the Mashable Twitter page in old Twitter. You can see Pete Cashmore uses Hootsuite

The same homepage above is seen again in new twitter below. On #newtwitter, the client attribution is completely removed and hidden in the details section, so users are unlikely see what platform their friends are using. Is this a move to shield users from knowing who is avoiding the webpage and experiencing Twitter entirely through another client? Likely.

Recently, Twitter has received some backlash from developers like Nelson Elhage. Additionally, #newtwitter has copied much of the functionality available on other clients to get users to return to Twitter on the web. Unfortunately, pretending like other clients don’t exist will just anger developers rather than remove them from the Twitter ecosystem.

Click on the tweet. The attribution is still there.

I didn’t like this change either, but I did notice that “via {client}” isn’t entirely erased from #newtwitter. Click any tweet & it opens in the right panel with some additional context. Here, “via {client}” is displayed.

Hi Paul! Yes, I said “the client attribution is completely removed and hidden in the details section”

Clicking on the tweet will give you the client, but it’s still a cut to the developer when no one sees where the tweets come from in the stream.

As a Twitter user, I frankly don’t care about the software used to post the tweet. It’s one less piece of useless information cluttering a rather overwhelming interface.

@admin: The information is still in the stream, the twitter homepage won’t display it though until you’ve clicked on the tweet. But it’s not missing from the API (and who goes to twitter.com to read tweets anyway?)
